It’s a Halloween Spook-tacular!
CocoWalk, Coconut Grove

Halloween in the Grove has become an annual block party experience. CocoWalk enters the fray with a kid-friendly activity-filled event from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Courtyard. The CocoWalk merchants will share treats (no tricks!) while kids of all ages enjoy the close-up magician, tattoo and balloon artists, and spook-tacular music! There will be boys and girls costume contests and fun prizes for the #1 best costume, also for the scariest, coolest, funniest, and most original costumes. Don’t miss this!

The popular Power 96 morning show crew – JP. Afrika, and Big Lip, will host the grown-up musical festivities from 6 to 9 p.m. Then DJ George Jett/306MIX returns for another year to spin the best in oldies, and then deliver House and Techno music from 11 to 3 a.m.!

For the first time, Phobooth is invited to join the party with a fun photo booth from 4 to 7 p.m. You can pose and show off your clever costumes and walk away with instant snapshots to share! Phobooth has entertained at events for Wholefoods, Toyota, and Coach, to name a few.

Walk of Art

Last week I read an article in The Miami Herald about the proliferation of Art Walks in South Florida. As former owner of Gallery One in Coconut Grove, I am thrilled to see the flourish of art walks throughout Miami and nearby areas.

The events have a way of creating a sense of community while often supporting local artists. Each Art Walk is infused with a unique cultural flavor making each a must see. I think instead of a book club, I may entice some friends to create an art club this fall…
Here is a quick snapshot of the events around town provided by The Miami Herald:

Art + Design Night/Gallery Walk, Miami Design District, second Saturday of the month, next walk 7-10 p.m. Oct. 13; miamidesigndistrict.net

Bakehouse Art Complex, Wynwood, second Friday, 7-10 p.m. Sept. 14; bacfl.org

Bird Road Art District, third Saturday, 7-10 p.m. Sept. 15; thebirdroadartdistrict.com

The Falls Art District Gallery Walk, third Friday, 7-10 p.m. Sept. 21; off Southwest 87th Avenue between 129th and 134th streets; fallsartdistrict.com.

Little Havana Art Walk (new) Little Havana + Futurama Art Building, second Friday, 7-11 p.m. Oct. 12; facebook.com/littlehavana.artwalk

20 Years Later.

My son’s name is Andrew. Perfect name for a boy, I always thought. Not a great name for a hurricane, though.

The first one in the season will surely miss South Florida.
No way it’s gonna hit us.
Slim chance.
Be ready, just in case.
Hunker down, it’s coming our way.

I uttered an iteration of each of these sentences 20 years ago. I remember the fear and devastation. I remember seeing this newscast:

I thought our community would be crippled for decades. Instead, we bounced back and learned key lessons that I hope will keep history from repeating itself.
