The City of Coral Gables is proposing to make a specific area along Coral Way between Anderson Road and Alhambra Circle a historic district. Dona Spain, the city’s historic preservation officer, was quoted on MiamiHerald.com as saying, ” It just stands to reason it would be a historic district because there are such a large number of historically significant homes on that street.”
Arva Moore Parks, author, historian and local preservationist agrees. “It’s really where Coral Gables was born.” Presently working on completing an autobiography of Coral Gables’ city founder, George Merrick, Parks states that this street’s importance reflects Merrick’s “original plan that a lot of people don’t realize, to build everything in rock and really build for the middle class.”
Two public meetings to discuss the designation will be held but remain unscheduled. What do you think of the idea?
